Scott Kosloski joined the City of Lakes Community Band in October 2023. He has been an active educator, conductor, and performer in the Twin Cities for over twenty years. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from St. Olaf College and a Master's of Music in Wind Band Conducting from Central Michigan University. He is currently the orchestra director at Burnsville High School and has previously held band director positions in Wayzata, Saint Louis Park, and Burnsville. Scott's main instrument is percussion and he has performed with many ensembles throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. He is also an active clinician and judge for solo and ensemble competitions as well as large group band and orchestra contests. Scott grew up in Crystal, MN and graduated from Cooper High School. He lives in Saint Louis Park and spends every moment possible with his amazing wife and two energetic children.
Maxwell Voda grew up in Minneapolis and continues to call the city home. He has been playing music since he was four years old, and is an avid violinist and string bassist. Maxwell attended St. Olaf college where he earned a bachelors in Instrumental Music Education. At school he discovered a love for conducting as well as performing, and since graduation enjoys his participation in the Minnesota Symphonic Winds in addition to his Associate conducting duties with the City of Lakes Community Band. A passionate and motivated educator, Maxwell currently works in Edina Public Schools as the district's 5th grade orchestra teacher, and has also taught in the Robbinsdale and Minneapolis public schools. When he’s not doing something music related, you can find Maxwell with a book at his family cabin or on his road bike.
Danette (clarinet) joined the CLCB in 2024 and is loving it! Danette moved here from Ohio a long time ago and feels Minnesota is her home. She sings competitively and is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota and Sweet Adelines International. She has a a vast music library and worked in the music library at Wright State University. Danette says "Although massively big bands sound fantastic, my old band director taught me that quality, not quantity was the key thing to remember. We can be small but sound great if we don't go bananas with the sound." She also plays other instruments at home in her spare time.
Megan (oboe) has been a member of the City of Lakes Community Band since 2012 with a few breaks for maternity leaves and COVID. She has played in band since fifth grade, starting out as a clarinet player and transitioning to oboe in her sophomore year of high school. She played oboe at St. Olaf College in a student-run concert band called the Valhalla Band, and then took several years off before joining the CLCB. Megan loves the experience of being in the middle of dozens of musicians each combining their unique talents to create a collective, complex sound. Outside of band, Megan spends her time caring for a menagerie of pets and baking pie.Â
Kelly (Euphonium) has been a member of the band since 2015. In her time with the band she has been a section leader, the board secretary, and is now serving as the treasurer. Kelly has been playing music as long as she can remember. She has played the piano, flute, and saxophone through high school and started playing the euphonium in college as a member of the University of Minnesota marching band. The shut down for a year and a half during COVID was the longest she has gone without playing as a part of a band since joining band at the end of 5th grade. Kelly's favorite part of band is making music and creating harmonies with other people. It's the best stress relief. Â
Nina (baritone saxophone) joined the band in the winter of 2021. She has been playing the saxophone since 6th grade, including jazz band, marching band, and state solo and ensemble competitions in high school, and a weekly concert band while attending the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Nina persisted in playing the sax even through the pandemic, with one semester of virtual band (sitting alone and playing precisely along with a click track) and another with instrument PPE (wrangling a large instrument into an even larger cloth sack). She graduated and began working as a water resources engineer in 2021 and is grateful to be able to continue playing music with the City of Lakes Community Band.Â
Sara (clarinet) has played with the City of Lakes Community Band since 2006 and serves as clarinet section leader. A lifelong musician, she began piano in 2nd grade and clarinet in 4th grade, later performing with award-winning ensemble groups in Iowa and the Wartburg College Wind Ensemble, including a Carnegie Hall appearance and 2 European tours. Outside of music, Sara works as a substitute teacher and enjoys helping kids learn and grow. She values the friendships, community connections, and shared love of music that make CLCB special.Â
Karissa (tenor saxophone) has been a member of CLCB since September 2021. Captivated by music as a 4th grader when the high school band came to perform in the elementary school's gym, this was the moment she knew band and music needed to be part of her life. Piano lessons began, as did clarinet in the 6th grade. After her middle school band teacher told her clarinets couldn't be in jazz, she switched to tenor sax and the rest is history! Karissa received her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, double-majoring in Psychology and Music with an emphasis in Jazz Studies. She spends her workdays as an administrative assistant at a mental health clinic. When she isn't working, she enjoys kayaking the many lakes of Minneapolis (it's the city of lakes, after all!), catching live music of all kinds, and volunteering with animal-centered organizations.
Nathan (trumpet) picked up the trumpet at 5th grade music night and never looked back! As a "band kid," he played in concert, jazz, marching and pep bands in high school and college. Nathan started playing again as an adult when his boys joined band in elementary school. He enjoys playing in churches and musical pit orchestras, as well as with CLCB. Nathan and his wife live in their Southwest Minneapolis newly-empty nest with two cats and a dog. He has been a member of the CLCB board since 2021. Professionally, he manages projects at HealthPartners.Â
